About two weeks ago I finished reading Me Before You by Jojo Moyes. I originally decided to read the book because one of the youtubers I watch recommended the book in one of her videos and said that it was becoming a movie. Afterwards I looked the movie trailer up and decided that
I wanted to read the book before the movie came out. Besides the recommendation of the youtuber I watch, I decided to read the book because I taught that the theme was very interesting and I had never read anything before that was anywhere similar to Me Before You.
Me Before You is about a woman called Louisa Clark who has lived her entire life in the same town, living with her parents, grandfather, sister, and nephew. Louisa is quite content with her life, working at a Cafe near the castle, dating her fitness obsessed boyfriend. Louisa has worked at the same place for years but one day her boss fires her because he has to move away and Louisa is left without a job. Louisa’s family depends on the movie that she brings in so she goes searching for a job and does not find any that she likes. Eventually she ends up finding a job caring for a disabled man who ends up being Will Traynor.
Will Traynor is a man that lived a very adventurous life up until one day while he’s on his way to work, he gets hits by a motorcycle and becomes a quadriplegic. After Will’s accident happens, he’s no longer able to continue with his very successful career and he distances himself from his friends and girlfriend. Will becomes quite bitter after his accident because he was use to living a crazy life and is now stuck in a wheelchair, unable to do anything for himself. When Louisa becomes her caretaker, they do not get along at first but eventually find an understanding for each other and become close. Later on a secret of Will’s is revealed to Louisa and she makes it her job to take Will on adventures and make his life worthwhile again. On her journey to helping Will, she falls in love with him and Will falls in love with her as well. The two are an unlikely pair and Will decides that he cannot be with her because he wants her to go out and explore the possibilities that the world offers and leave her hometown. (I would say more on what the story is about but I don’t want to give any spoilers.)
I really enjoyed reading Me Before You because I had never read anything quite like this book. I had heard many great things about the book and it did not disappoint. The story is very emotional but I didn’t cry as much as I thought that I would. I only ended up crying at the end of the book but the ending really killed me and I couldn’t believe what happened. I had so many different emotions throughout the entire book and even though I really liked the book, I was so angry and heartbroken by the end. I felt as though Will was being stupid and selfish even though I understand why he did certain things. While I felt anger I also felt like Will and Louisa’s story was told in such a beautiful way because they really brought out the best in each other.
Have an ALMIGHTY Day!
P.S. We’ll be posting a blog about the film adaptation of Me Before You and what we felt about it.
